Boxing

Boxing is a combat sport in which two people, usually wearing protective gloves, throw punches at each other for a predetermined amount of time in a boxing ring.

History of Boxing

The first proof of pugilism was found in Egypt and dates back to the year 3000 BC. The fighters were naked and the event was part of King’s festivities.

For years and years boxing continuously evolved and was first accepted as an Olympics sport in 688 BC at the 23rd Olympiad in Olympia.

Onomastos of smyrna became the first Olympic Boxing champion. Boxing evolved from 16th and 18 century prizefights, largely in Great Britain.

In the 18th Century boxing was revived in London in the form of bare-knuckle prizefights in which the contestants fought for money and the spectators made wagers on the outcome.

Modem boxing in the mid-19th century with the 1867 introduction of the Marquess of Queensberry Rules. The first boxer to be recognised as a Heavyweight Champion was James Figg in 1719.

The first boxing competition at the Olympic Games of modern times was at the 1904 edition in St-Louis (USA) with bouts in seven weight categories.

International boxing federation: la Fédération Internationale de Boxe Amateur (FIBA) was formed in 1920 during

Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. Later it was renamed as Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur (AIBA), and was formed to control the boxing World. 

First AIBA World Championships was held at Havana (Cuba) in1974. In India boxing became a popular sport after the formation of Boxing Federation of India (BFI) in 1949 at Bombay (now Mumbai).

Latest Rules

  • Boxing is overseen by a referee. 
  • Each round shall consist of a three (3)-minute (Females: two 2 minute) duration, with a one minute rest period between rounds.
  • A contestant who remained down, either recumbent or on one knee, after 10 seconds lost the match.
  • The result is decided when an opponent is deemed incapable to continue by a referee, is disqualified for breaking a rule, or resigns by throwing in a towel.
  • A man hanging on the ropes in a helpless state, with his toes off the ground, shall be considered down.
  • If a fight completes all of its allocated rounds, the victor is determined by judges’ scorecards at the end of the contest.
  • In the event that both fighters gain equal scores from the judges, professional bouts are considered a draw.
  • In Olympic boxing, because a winner must be declared, judges award the content to one fighter on technical criteria.  
  • No seconds or any other person to be allowed in the ring during the rounds. 

Types of Fouls

1. Hitting below the belt, holding, tripping, kicking, and butting with foot or knee

2. Hits or blows with head, shoulder, forearm, elbow, throttling of the opponent, and pressing with arm or elbow in opponent’s face, pressing the head of the opponent back over the ropes

3. Hitting with open glove, the inside of the glove, wrist or side of the hand

4. Hits landing on the back of the opponent, and especially any blow on the back of the neck or head and kidney punch

5. Pivot blows

6. Attack whilst holding the ropes or making any unfair use of the ropes

7. Lying on, wrestling and throwing in the clinch

8. An aüack on an opponent who is down or who is in the act of rising

9. Holding and hitting or pulling and hitting.

Measurements And Specifications

(i) Ring Dimensions : 6.10m square roped around, the size of the apron must extend for 85cm outside the line of the ropes on each side.

(ii) Boxing Equipment : Headgear, Boxing Gloves, Mouth piece, Boxing Trunk (Long Short), Bandage, Protective Cup, Vest (Boxing T-Shirt).

(iil) Round : Three rounds for men, Four rounds for women.

(iv) Duration : 3 minutes for men; 2minutes women with an interval of I minute.

(v) Officials : 1 Referee, 5 Judge, I Supervisor, I Ringside Doctor, l, Chief Jury, I Timekeeper, I Bell Striker, I Technical Official, 1 Recorder.

Terminologies

Boxer : Means any athlete registered by an AIDA National Member Federation and a member of AIBA.

Pugilist : A player trained for practicing Boxing.   

Ring : An area where boxing competition is held.

Bout : Means the boxing contest between two Boxers taking place as part of a competition.

Referee : Means the person who ensures that all Rules are followed by the Boxers during their Bouts in the ring. 

Seconds : Means the Coaches or Trainers who are certified by AIBA and who are allowed to act in the corner of the ring.

Knockout (KO) : The Boxer touches the floor with any part of the body other than the Boxer’s feet as the result of a blow or series of blows.

Abandon (ABD) If a Boxer retires voluntarily or if the Coach throws the towel into the ring or appears on the apron.   

Box : When ordering the Boxers to continue boxing.
